The 1960s and ’70s introduced a fresh, dynamic wave through artists like Andraé Crouch and the Hawkins Family. Crouch’s timeless songs—“Soon and Very Soon”, “My Tribute”, and “The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power”—brought gospel into mainstream awareness, blending soulful grooves with deep theology. Meanwhile, Walter and Edwin Hawkins, with their hit “Oh Happy Day,” took gospel music to the global stage, proving that a church choir could reach radio charts and reshape popular music worldwide.

Nearly every major secular artist—from Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, and Sam Cooke to Beyoncé and John Legend—began their musical journey in the church. Gospel trained their voices, honed their stage presence, and gave them a foundation rooted in soul and sincerity. Its emotional depth, call-and-response style, and improvisational power became the DNA of American popular music.
